چکیده

We derive asymptotic expansions for the displacement at the boundary of a smooth, elastic body in the presence of small inhomogeneities. Both the body and the inclusions are allowed to be anisotropic. This work extends prior work of Capdeboscq and Vogelius (Math. Modeling Num. Anal. 37, 2003) for the conductivity case. In particular, we obtain an asymptotic expansion of the difference between the displacements at the boundary with and without inclusions, under Neumann boundary conditions, to first order in the measure of the inclusions. We impose no geometric conditions on the inclusions, which need only be measurable sets. The first-order correction contains a moment or polarization tensor M that encodes the effect of the inclusions. We also derive some basic properties of this tensor M. In the case of thin, strip-like, planar inhomogeneities we obtain a formula for M only in terms of the elasticity tensors, which we assume strongly convex, their inverses, and a frame on the curve that supports the inclusion. We prove uniqueness of M in this setting and recover the formula previously obtained by Beretta and Francini (SIAM J. Math. Anal., 38, 2006).

Spectral Problems in Elasticity. Singular Boundary Perturbations

A. The three-dimensional spectral elasticity problem is studied in an anisotropic and inhomogeneous solid with small defects, i.e., inclusions, voids, and microcracks. Asymptotics of eigenfrequencies and the corresponding elastic eigenmodes are constructed and justified. New technicalities of the asymptotic analysis are related to variable coefficients of differential operators, vectoria...

The topological derivative in anisotropic elasticity

A comprehensive treatment of the topological derivative for anisotropic elasticity is presented, with both the background material and the trial small inhomogeneity assumed to have arbitrary anisotropic elastic properties. A formula for the topological derivative of any cost functional defined in terms of regular volume or surface densities depending on the displacement is established, by combi...

The topological derivative of stress-based cost functionals in anisotropic elasticity

The topological derivative of cost functionals J that depend on the stress (through the displacement gradient, assuming a linearly elastic material behavior) is considered in a quite general 3D setting where both the background and the inhomogeneity may have arbitrary anisotropic elastic properties. The topological derivative DJ(z) of J quantifies the asymptotic behavior of J under the nucleati...

The Influence of Anisotropic Membrane Inclusions on Curvature Elastic Properties of Lipid Membranes

A membrane inclusion can be defined as a complex of protein or peptide and the surrounding significantly distorted lipids. We suggest a theoretical model that allows for the estimation of the influence of membrane inclusions on the curvature elastic properties of lipid membranes. Our treatment includes anisotropic inclusions whose energetics depends on their in-plane orientation within the memb...

N-body Study of Anisotropic Membrane Inclusions: Membrane Mediated Interactions and Ordered Aggregation

We study the collective behavior of inclusions inducing local anisotropic curvatures in a flexible fluid membrane. The N-body interaction energy for general anisotropic inclusions is calculated explicitly, including multi-body interactions. Long-range attractive interactions between inclusions are found to be sufficiently strong to induce aggregation. Monte Carlo simulations show a transition f...
